What is a Doula?

"Doula" (pronounced "doola") is a Greek word meaning "woman servant or caregiver". It now refers to an experienced woman who offers emotional and practical support to a woman (or couple) before, during and after childbirth. A doula believes in “mothering the mother” - enabling a woman to have the most satisfying and empowered time that she can during pregnancy, birth and the early days as a new mum. This type of support also helps the whole family to relax and enjoy the experience.

Doula UK

Personal Information:

As a mum to 3 beautiful children myself, I understand that being pregnant is not only an exciting time but also a time when many mums to be need a little bit of reassurance about what is happening now and in the future.

Unfortunately, many people no longer have their family living close by to offer the required reasurance. Doulas can help to fill that gap by "being there" when needed.

Sometimes mums to be are a little nervous about the birth, and may also be nervous about having their new bundle of fun. I have lots of newborn experience (including twin experience), I will be able to help and assist you with your new baby/babies.
Philosophy & Service:
As a trainee, my cost is generally cheaper than that of a "recognised" doula. I still offer a similar package though.

Birth Doula

As a trainee Birth Doula, I will see you twice during your pregnancy, I will also naturally attend the birth, staying as long as you need me to, and then see you for one post natal visit.

The initial visit is an interiew. Do we like each other? Would you like me at your birth? etc. It is also where you can tell me about yourself and your expectations.

The next two visits will allow us to go through your birth plan together, we will discuss pain relief, birth physiology and we will also discuss what you see my role as being.

During the birth I will be there to give you emotional and practical support. I am not medically trained and will not give medical advice. I will stay with you for as long as you need me to.

The last visit in this birth package is a post natal visit. This is your chance to discuss any worries or concerns with me and to make sure that everything is going well.

All of this is in addition to any email and telephone support that you require.

Post natal Doula

As a Post natal Doula, I am there to emotionally and practically support you with your new baby/babies.

For first time mums in particular, I can offer support with feeding, routines, bathing etc

For all new mums, I can help with older children, do light housework and help with food shopping or local errands.

I am available for post-natal work during the hours of 9.30am - 2.30pm Monday to Friday.

Outside of these hours please contact me to discuss

I am on call for 24 hours a day for two weeks either side of your due date. You can also contact me as much as you like by email or on my mobile.

As a post natal doula: £15 per hour for post-natal visits (plus mileage @ 40p a mile and car park costs). A minimum of 3 hours per visit.

I also offer a Birth/Postnatal package. This consists of the two antenatal visits, my attendance at the birth, a post natal visit and 15 hrs of post natal care (3 hours a day for the first 5 days).
